Gozo actually is a small island right across the water from Malta in the Mediterranean. To get there we flew to Malta, took one of the bus shuttle services to get to the port of Cirkewwa and then took the Gozo ferry to the island. The ferry at the time of visiting (2010) was around 4 euros for every passenger and about 13 euros for every car plus the driver

If you are used to Spain or France with all the most up-to-date amenities then Gozo may not be for you because it feels that the island is around 10 years behind these countries. Not necessarily a bad thing for anyone who is looking for a peaceful soothing holiday. You will not find any nightlife like you may find in mainland Malta we were not on the lookout but you find areas such as Ramla Bay Beach and Marsalform if you happen to be looking for something a little more high energy. We did have occasion to stay at one of the hotels in Gozo which looked appealing enough I unfortunately forgot the name of it mainly because we had been traumatised by cockroaches at our first lodge.

You will certainly require an automobile (they drive on the same side as the UK) should you be staying on Gozo unless you are fine with riding on buses. The buses are real antiques from the 50s and are extremely adorned.

We hired a villa in Gozo, near the village of Xaghra which was quiet, very much like the rest of the island apart from the capital Victoria. As the island is very small it is comparatively easy to drive out to one of the towns in the evening to get a meal. You will find that the food is predominantly Italian so pasta and pizza are on most menus. We did come across a great little square in Xaghra which had a number of high quality restaurants that served fresh fish along with other meat dishes. The food was costly here but Xlendi was great to visit if you had had enough of pizza.

There is quite a lot to visit on Gozo with a number of bays such as Xlendi which is a small traveller resort on the south west coast. Gozo weather promises warm sea breezes and full on sunshine.

The Citadel in Victoria is well worth a visit. Gozo being predominantly catholic has churches that are lavishly decorated and many of the churches are lit at night. There are some interesting museums to visit as well some exhibiting the huge wealth of the Catholic Church in solid silver.

For those who have some spare cash, the two excursions that I would recommend are the Seaplane that will take you on a scenic flight around the islands and leave you in Malta for the day. Be prepared to jostle for a window seat so that you can see the spectacular coast line. The plane flies pretty low so you can see a lot of detail.

The second excursion is to hire a boat for the day. We paid the extra and had the boat to ourselves which is terrific as the captain will take you where you wish to go, we were provided with coffee and afternoon tea and cooked fresh lunch of fish that has been caught that morning. We stopped off at numerous bays and swam with the fish. This was a magical experience. The captain told us to jump in the water with our snorkels and then he fed the fish. We had hundreds of fish all swimming around us rather like a huge aquarium.
